MEMBERS of a new committee which runs a support group for carers dealing with dementia in Haltwhistle are settling into their roles.

The Dementia Support at Haltwhistle group was founded around five years ago by John and Rosemary Kemble, who retired around six months ago.

The group has since been taken over by Chris Jameson, who has been joined by new committee members including Sheila Moore, Di Robison and Jane Staley.

Chris, from Gilsland, has a professional caring background, and has previously worked for the Alzheimer’s Society and as a counsellor.

“I was interested in setting up a group in Brampton originally and I heard about the group in Haltwhistle and I thought I’ll go along and see what they do.

“It quickly became clear that Rosemary and John were stepping down and I thought, why start one in Brampton when Haltwhistle will need someone to take over?”

The group meet on the first Tuesday of every month at Haltwhistle Library from 2pm to 4pm and it aims to support carers of those with dementia. They also hold social events, such as a summer afternoon tea at Blenkinsopp Castle earlier this month,

“Although things have improved, dementia is a very isolating illness and there’s a stigma attached,” explained Chris. “People are very frightened and don’t always know how to handle it. It can be very difficult for carers to get support.

“Often people are just diagnosed then left to their own devices. We offer moral support, like peer support and offer advice and information.”

The meeting on Tuesday, October 3, will specifically inform carers about issues surrounding power of attorney. At the meeting, a financial adviser or solicitor will be present to talk through the process.

The group also offer support for people with questions who can’t make it along to meetings. Chris can be contacted on 016977 47008.
