A FUND-RAISING campaign to secure the future of Haltwhistle’s outdoor swimming pool has raised almost £38,000

Haltwhistle Swimming and Leisure Centre requires up to £180,000 to replace ancient boilers and other equipment which is relied upon to heat the centre’s two outdoor pools during the winter months.

The existing equipment has not been upgraded since the centre opened in 1975, and maintenance cost have become increasingly expensive.

But local people have rallied around to support a fund-raising campaign for the new equipment, launched earlier this year.

In August, residents Jan Hunt, who had never swam previously, and Sue Sabuda, who had only been comfortable in really shallow water, successfully swam a mile for the cause.

Their efforts were complemented by other events, including a 24-hour swimathon and gala, discos, a coffee morning and individual donations.

Staff member Sam Burns is preparing to undertake a skydive, while visitors to the centre are being invited to purchase wristbands.

In addition, a murder mystery night is being held at the centre tomorrow, starting at 7.30pm.

The centre’s Margaret Harrison said: “Some of the money has come from grant funding, but the efforts of the people in Haltwhistle have been phenomenal.

“It shows how much our outdoor pools mean to everyone, and we are grateful for all their efforts.”
