THERE was a festive welcome to Haltwhistle for people of all ages last Friday night.

The annual Christmas lights display was switched on ahead of the town’s annual late night shopping extravaganza.

Main Street and Westgate were hives of activity as families turned out for an array of live entertainment.

Santa Claus met children in the Market Place, Christmas carols were sung, and clog dancers provided an audible rhythm.

Further along the street, there was live music and a wide variety of stalls offering home bakery, crafts and other festive treats.

Most shops stayed open until 8pm.

It all happened beneath a new set of Christmas lights provided by Haltwhistle Chamber of Trade.

They included an illuminated Welcome to Haltwhistle banner across the road on Westgate.

Trader Richard Skeet, of Centre of Britain Electrix, said: “I think everybody loves the Christmas lights and it’s been great to see so many people out supporting the shops.”
