VISITORS to the farmers’ market on Sunday hailed from as far as Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands , London and Essex, as well as right across the North from coast to coast. It was really good to be able to show all those visitors the extent of the National Park on the lovely embroidered Map that was once again hanging in the hall.

On view also was some of the 30 metres of double-sided bunting that has been created by people, mainly youngsters, here and elsewhere. On one side the inspiration has been our Dark Skies – and on the other the wildlife of the whole park.

Naturally, many local regulars were away on holiday, but stall holders commented on how thin on the ground our local customers seem to be. This is important as the future of the market is now in the balance, and local support is vital for it to continue.

The current market organiser completes 10 years this October and is sticking to her resolve to hand it over then – though it has been thoroughly enjoyable, with a host of friends made and an enormous amount learnt about food and farming as well as retailing and fundraising, it really will be better for the market to have new leadership. There is a vital team of local helpers who assist with many tasks for the smooth running of the market. The future remains uncertain.

There were encouraging comments from customers at the market on Sunday and honest, practical suggestions and comments are now very welcome as to how the market should proceed – or indeed, close. Use Facebook and Twitter or put written comments through the door of the village hall where the Market takes place.
