A PRESTIGIOUS agricultural event will begin a new chapter in its illustrious history on Sunday when farmers flock to the Gilsland Show.

The Gilsland Agricultural Society – which celebrated its 100th anniversary last year – has prepared the showfield at Triermain Farm in wet weather this week.

But show secretary Vicky Baty said everything is in place for the 101st instalment of the show to be just as successful as 2014’s centenary celebrations.

“We’re praying for nice weather on the day,” admitted Vicky, who is presiding over her first show as secretary, after being appointed in February to take over from Rachel Marston.

“We are expecting a good turnout in all the classes, from sheep and cattle, to dogs, industrial, and other attractions such as Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling.”

The equestrian event traditionally takes place the week before the main show, but was cancelled due to bad weather last Sunday.

Vicky explained: “Due to the weather, we didn‘t get the silage off the field in time, and it was too wet. It’s very disappointing for all involved.

”But we‘re going ahead with Gilsland Show on Sunday and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone along, and continuing the traditions of a show which has a lot of history.“

Galloway and Belted Galloway cattle are among the agricultural attractions, alongside dogs, forage, terrier racing and pony sports.

There will also be a sheepdog display, stalls and music, while a clown will also be in attendance to provide children’s entertainment.

An action-packed industrial tent will feature horticulture, baking, knitting, needlework and crafts, photography and walking sticks.

Last year’s celebrations saw a book about the show‘s past launched by Keith Blood, as well as a DVD, and an exhibition of memorabilia.

Following the centenary celebrations, Rachel Marston stepped down as secretary, after five years in the post.

Vicky, a former member of Kirklinton Young Farmers’ Club in Cumbria stepped forward to fill the vacancy.

”It’s great to be associated with Gilsland Show,“ she added “We have been busy but we are looking forward to getting things under way this weekend.“

Judging starts at 10am on Sunday. For more details visit www.gilslandshow.org
