DRAINAGE problems which have plagued an underpass in Haltwhistle are being taken seriously, councillors have insisted.

The narrow Boat Lane runs under the railway line and provides vital access for wheelchairs and pushchairs to the westbound platform at Haltwhistle railway station.

But drainage problems during heavy rainfall can make it impassable, with concerns raised that the water may be contaminated with sewerage.

Chairing the latest meeting of Haltwhistle Town Council, Coun. Alan Sharp said Northumberland County Council is working hard to address the issue.

He added: “They are keen to get this sorted as soon as possible, and it has been made a matter of urgency.”
