TWO schoolboys have raised £2,360 for charity by walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall.

Haltwhistle Middle School pupils James Little and Shane Birkett, both aged 12, walked from Wallsend to Bowness on Solway over six days from August 28 to September 2.

The money raised will go towards their two chosen charities, Macmillan Cancer Support and Ataxia UK Research.

James recently lost his grandma to cancer, while Shane’s grandad suffers from Ataxia, a hereditary condition which can affect speech, eye movement and mobility due to a lack of muscle co-ordination.

Shane’s mum, Anne Birkett, said: “This was a tough challenge, and after the first couple of days they realised what they had let themselves in for.

“But Shane and James had the determination required, and they had people walking with them throughout, which was a great encouragement for them.

“This was an excellent achievement in aid of two very worthy causes which mean a lot to the two boys and their families.”

Among the other walkers was Shane’s cousin, Aidan Kidd, aged nine, who managed to walk three of the days, totalling 41 miles.

His nine-year-old brother, Olly, also made a walking contribution.

Shane and James received a certificate of charitable achievement from Hexham’s MP Guy Opperman.
