THE search for a missing pensioner from Greenhead has ended in tragedy after police confirmed they have found a body.
Northumbria Police officers issued an appeal for help to trace Walter Hutton (74) who was last seen at 7pm on Friday near his home address in the village.
A description of Mr Hutton, who was said to be slow on his feet and walked with a stoop, was issued to members of the public.
In an update on Sunday morning, police confirmed that they were working with other forces to continue the search with "specialist resources from other areas" being used to assist.
However, at around 4.30pm on Sunday, officers confirmed a body had been discovered.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Janice Hutton, Chief Superintendent for Northern Command, would like to thank partner agencies and members of the public who have helped with our search.
"Our thoughts are with Walter's family at this difficult time."
