THIS time of year is a busy time for schoolchildren, with exams, the onset of the summer holidays and, for those at the end of their school careers, the high school prom.

Of course, every teenager knows the importance of arriving in style – but Haltwhistle’s Harry Armstrong didn’t go for a limo or a Ferrari.

Instead, the 16-year-old Queen Elizabeth High School student arrived in a vintage 1956 Ferguson TE20 tractor, which he had restored with his dad, Richard, over the past three years.

Harry, who has his tractor’s licence, drove the 30-mile round trip from his home in Haltwhistle to Hexham by himself.

Harry’s mum Christine said: “He’s done his tractor’s licence so that’s his mode of transport. He takes it out for jobs and things. We don’t live on a farm, but he’s mad on vintage stuff and he’s restored it with his dad and he wanted it ready for his prom.

“He’s had it for three years, and they’ve just done it when they’ve both had time. He’s done it all with guidance from his dad.”

Having finished school, Harry is putting his mechanical knowledge to good use, and has already started an apprenticeship at Plumline Coaches in Acomb.
