Green shoots of winter recovery

THERE are legions of folk superstitions about the weather. I was reminded that if the snow stays in the dyke then it will need another snowstorm to wash it away.
As we approach the month of February we dread torrrents of rain or snow.
A famous Victorian landscape has the title ‘February Fill Dyke’ even though it was a scene on a November evening after rain.
The title is taken from an old country rhyme: “February fill the dyke, Be it black or be it white; But if it be white, It’s the better to like.”
I’m not sure I agree with the sentiment.
Candlemas is on the second of February which has a dire warning: “If Candlemas Day be fair and clear, There’ll be five winters in the year.”
Despite these predictions I have noticed that the snowdrops have begun to show their green shoots.
These beautiful flowers weather the winters year on year and make an appearance no matter what. Even if there is another covering they will bloom and cove the banks and ditches.
There are many people like those perfect flowers that weather the storms of life and keep going with dignity and beauty despite their situation.
There are people all around who strive in difficult circumstances without complaint or histrionics.
Just like the spring flowers they inspire hope for the future.
In the midst of your pain you inspired me
My hurts seem easier to bear
If I can help you carry your burden
Reach out and I’ll be there.
