ON TUESDAY Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 76 cattle, which included 51 over 30 month animals. Trade for prime cattle similar to previous week, with quality sorts keenly bid for. A poorer show of over 30 month animals cattle forward with trade easier on the week. There were 3,945 prime sheep forward on Tuesday. Following a sharp trade yesterday with many markets short of numbers, the sale started off well with numerous pens selling in excess of 120p. However as it became apparent that more numbers were forward trade eased, and settled just marginally better than last week. Lambs presented dry, clean and/or belly clipped received a premium. The sale was topped at 136.8p/kg for Beltex x lambs from Lingey Field weighing 38 kilos and making £52 purchased by Woodhead Brothers, Colne. Heavy lambs sold to £66 for Suffolk x lambs from Nilston Rigg.

ON Friday Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 910 cattle at their third special sale of suckled calves and weekly sale of store cattle. All classes of cattle met a fast selling trade with more customers operating. The sale was topped by an outstanding Belgian Blue steer from Mr J.S. Hubbuck Ltd, Rising Sun which made £1,130. A feature of the sale was a marvellous run of 12-17 month old Charolais cross and Limousin cross steers and heifers from James Herdman, Edlingham Newtown with Charolais cross steers selling to £1,080 and seven making £1,000 or more, 24 steers averaged £943.75. Heifers from the same home topped the sale at £915 for an excellent pen of three, seventeen heifers averaged £838.

ON Thursday, Hexham and Northern Marts had forward an entry of 1,050 at their Annual ‘Bellingham’ Prize show and Sale of spring born calves which was kindly sponsored by Northumberland National Park. An increased entry on the year was presented a good company of local and distant buyers. Quality calves sold well at increased rates of last year with plainer sorts harder to sell in particular Heifers. Prior to the sale Mr Steven Nundy, Kirton Holme, Boston expertly judged the prize show and made the following awards. The Champion calf an outstanding Limousin x British Blue heifer from E. Armstrong, Harlow Bower sold at £730 to Tim Brocklehurst, Mallard Hurn Farm, Spalding. The Reserve Champion another top quality Limousin x heifer from H.M. FOR their annual Longtown show and sale of Hillbred suckler calves on Saturday the Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward 435 head. With all classes of cattle selling well, the vendors averages were up on the year. The show was sponsored by Barclays Bank plc and the judging was carried out by Mr James Crichton, Loughrigg who awarded the championship to Greystoke Castle Farms for a 7 month old Charolais steer. Mrs L. Thomlinson presented the Jacob Thomlinson Challenge Trophy and the steer went on to sell for £750 and purchased by Mr A. Williams, Wales. The reserve champion was a seven-month-old Limousin steer from Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill which sold to £700 and purchased by Mr R Horner, Yorkshire. Other prizes were Limousin bullock second and third Wanwood Hill, Limousin heifer first, second and third Wanwood Hill. Any other Continental bullock second Wanwood Hill, third Greystoke Castle. The highlight of the sale was a superb run of 146 Charolais and Limousin calves from Greystoke Castle Farms with Charolais bullocks to £750 and Limousin bullocks to £570, heifers to £530 for Charolais and £450 for Limousin.
