FOR their weekly sale on Tuesday, Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 101 cattle, which included seven young bulls and 63 over 30 month animals. There was a plainer show of prime cattle forward. Prime cattle prices. Heifers per kilo: Limousin to 165.5p Claywalls and 159.5p Flotterton. Simmental to 159.5p and 158.5p Claywalls. Charolais to 154.5p Claywalls and 151.5p Flotterton. A lot of over 30 month cattle lacking flesh, well fleshed cows keenly bid for.

There was a total of 4,794 prime sheep forward which comprised of 4,249 lambs and 545 cast ewes and rams. With more buyers operating the lamb trade set off almost £5 better than last Tuesdays trade however, as news from other centres filtered through demand eased and settled at not much more than £1 better on the week towards the end of the sale. Nicely fleshed, farm assured lambs weighing from 38-43 kilos sold to 137.5p/kg for Beltex x lambs from Comb Hills Farm, Slaley. Heavy lambs were much sharper on the week selling to 138.3p/kg for superb Texel x lambs weighing 47 kilos and making £65 from High Baulk, Great Whittington. Prime lamb prices. ON FRIDAY at their weekly sale Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 352 store cattle and suckled calves. A small but mixed show met another very firm demand with strong well fleshed cattle selling extremely well to a top of £1,040 for a superb Blonde x bullock from Merryshields, Capheaton. Heifers sold to £875 for three-quarter heifers from Old Deanham.

ON THURSDAY, Hexham and Northern Marts held their sale of 6,550 Blackface and Swaledale ewes, gimmers and ewe lambs. Together with Mule, Texel and other gimmers and ewes and Mule ewe lambs. A good selection of draft ewes and gimmers were forward and buyers were very selective in their purchases.

AT THEIR Scots Gap centre on Wednesday Hexham and Northern Marts had forward an entry of 1,746 prime lambs to average 43.3kg, 122.3p/kg and £53.24 per head. A quality, well fleshed show of lambs were presented with levels greatly increased on those seen earlier in the week. An entry of 474 head was forward which included the dispersal of the Hazelwood (1939) flock of 68 females. This champion went on to be sold at £3,200 to N. and E. Sinclair, Shielsknowe, Camptown. The reserve champion was awarded to the female champion ewe from G. Shapiro, Hazelwood, which went on to sell for £2300 and was purchased by Mr P Howell, Fir Tree Farm, Westnor, Bishops Castle. This ewe was sired by T.I. Shrewbridge “E” plus off a ewe sired by N3 Parceltown Neptune “E” plus. The first prize aged ram from Hazelwood, a three shear sold at £600 to A. Ryder, Newton Farm, Annan. First prize shearling ram from Claire Bisset, East Dukesfield, sold at £450 to Miss J.A. Symes, Cockflat Farm. The second and third prize shearling rams both from T.L. Forster and Son, Lowes Fell, sold at £700 to G.H. Walton and Son, Greyside, and £720 to J. and D. Longlands, Tone Hall. The second and third prize ram lambs were both from R.D. Hazelwood flock dispersal. The highlight of the day was the dispersal of the noted Bluefaced Leicester Hazelwood female flock no 1939 on behalf of Glen Shapiro. Glen decided to disperse the flock as her husband Dan is retiring and will now spend more time travelling. The flock had been running for 23 years and was well known all over the British Isles and was shown at all the major and many local shows winning many championships over the years. The sheep were shown in excellent condition and buyers were present from all parts of the country and Ireland who bid strongly to ensure they were able to purchase Hazelwood bloodlines. Arthur Yeats who kindly sponsored the Leicester gimmer class and who has been a great help to Glen in preparing the sheep for sale presented her with the T.W. Ridley Memorial Trophy for the best female which was also the reserve overall champion in the show. This X50 ewe by Shrewbridge “E” plus sold at £2,300 to P. Howell, Fir Tree Farm, Westnor, Bishops Castle. X29 ewe sired by Barlaes “E” plus sold at £1800 to the Middle Dukesfield flock. W38 ewe again sired by Barlaes “E” plus sold at £1,700 to C.V. McKellar, Kiel Croft, Benderloch. X35 sired by Barlaes “E” plus sold at £1,700 to H. Hughes, Crafrant, North Wales.
