ON FRIDAY Hexham and Northern Marts had a large entry of 432 store cattle for the time of year with quality well bred, well grown cattle an excellent trade.

AT THE opening sale on Friday for store lambs Hexham and Northern Marts had an entry of 555 head. All lambs were a fast trade and a number of customers left without any sheep.

LAST Wednesday Hexham and Northern Marts at their Scots Gap centre had forward an entry of 1,173 prime lambs to average 42.8kg, 130.8ppkg and £56.04 per head.
Numbers were less than expected due to the extreme wet weather. Lambs were a very sharp trade despite being a poorer show with the weather taking its toll on the condition of the lambs.
The sale was topped at £66.80 by heavy Suffolk x lambs from Dene House, Kirkwhelpington and 138.3per kg for a superb pen of Texel x lambs from West Grange, Milbourne.

A good show saw distant buyers more prominent with all classes the best trade so far.

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart held their annual sale of Cheviot Mule ewe lambs and gimmer shearlings at Longtown on Tuesday.
An exceptional demand for an excellent show wirh ewe lambs to £94 and shearlings to £95.
The increasing demand for this breed particularly from the Midlands and Southern England was reflected in the exceptional trade for an excellent quality show.
The 2,400 ewe lambs averaged £60.82 (up £11.22 on the year) and 500 shearlings levelled at £86.84 (up £12).
In the ewe lamb section top was £94 paid by G Smith and Son, West Bolton to Messrs Cockburn, Kingside. Messrs Cockburn sold another pen at £90 and averaged £91.97 for a consignment of £71. M.A. Hedley, Overacres, Otterburn averaged £81.03 for 162 to a top of £86 and £85, M. Aynsley and Son, Wardshilll, Morpeth topped at £84 and £83 and averaged £75.84 for 172 lambs.
Other lamb prices included Gospel Hall £83, £82 (average £70.14 for 257), Embley £78, £75 (average £72.03 for 80); Corriehills £70, St John’s Kirk £70; Terrona £76, £68, £66, Carterton £66, £60; Crossdykes £57, Sundhope £54.
In the shearling section the sale topped at £95 paid to D. McGarva, Granton by Messrs J. Armstrong, Highrigg, £93 S. Whiteford, St John’s Kirk and G.B. Milroy, Mains of Machermere. Others were Whitton £90, £88, £87, Hownam Grange £89, £87, Mains of Machermere £89, St John’s Kirk £88, Gospel Hall £91, £85, Greenacres £85, Castlehill £87, £86, Carterton £79.
AT THEIR weekly Longtown mart prime stock sale on Thursday, the Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart had forward 80 prime cattle, along with 5,069 prime lambs and 6,221 cast ewes and rams.
