Finding time to celebrate successes

THIS can be the worst time of year for both parents and children. Fewer holidays stretch ahead than lie behind.

The weather has been soggy in the extreme. Distractions are either sparse or prohibitively expensive.

The Olympics have given inspiration but here in our rural setting facilities are limited. To make matters worse, the swimming pool has closed.

Into the mix of this hotbed the examination results arrived. It infuriates me when the media is full of snide comments about how easy these tests have become.

Come on! Encourage the younger generation. Be enthusiastic and lead by example by enjoying life. The young person has little choice of examination. These are the ones set so these are the ones they must take. So what if more obtain that elusive pass grade?

The curriculum, examination and marking scheme are determined by board academics. Schools and students must comply with the system in place. When someone gains good grades we should celebrate.

Seriously, would you rather most of the youngsters failed because we think it was harder in our day?

Surely we should be sharing the very best of our experiences rather than sniping.

This generation has to face far more choices and uncertainty than we ever imagined. Well done all of you.

May the younger generation be enthused by life

May the challenges of life inspire them

May the older generation offer support

Acknowledging a changing and complicated world.
