Weekly mart reports

FOR their weekly sale of primestock on Tuesday, Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 60 cattle, which included seven young bulls and 35 over 30 month animals. Along with 1,431 prime sheep, which comprised of 1,168 spring lambs, 64 hoggs and 199 ewes and rams.ON FRIDAY at their weekly sale Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 138 store cattle.LAST Wednesday, Hexham and Northern Marts at their Scots Gap centre had a small but quality show of lambs for the second sale of the season.THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart had forward on Thursday at their weekly Longtown prime stock sale, 94 prime cattle and three young beef bulls, along with 1,205 prime hoggs, 2,215 prime lambs and 4,116 cast ewes and rams.

Prime cattle prices. Heifers per kilo: Limousin to 180.5p Mirlaw House and 157.5p and 148.5p Little Whittington. Charolais to 168.5p and 160.5p Rusheylaw. Belgian Blue to 156.5p Mirlaw House. Steers per kilo: Charolais to 158.5p Rusheylaw. Limousin to 157.5p Little Whittington.

Steers per head: Belgian Blue to £1,222.91 Twizell Hall. Charolais to £1,068.29 Rusheylaw. Limousin to £1,065.98 Peacock House. Heifers per head: Limousin to £1,028.85 Mirlaw House.

Young bulls per kilo: Charolais to 155.5p and 153.5p Hepscott Manor.

Over 30 month animals were slightly easier on the week to average 116.6p kilo and £760.96 head.

There was a total of 1,431 prime sheep forward, which comprised of 1,168 spring lambs, 64 hoggs and 199 ewes and rams.

With more buyers in attendance operating for 11 processors, quality well drawn lambs met a tremendous trade selling to £70, three times, for Texel lambs weighing 45kgs and 44kgs from Lough Green and High Baulk, purchased by Thompson Wholesale Meat Ltd, Witton le Wear and Cranstons Ltd Butchers, Cattle Market, Hexham and for Suffolk lambs weighing 51kgs from Lowes Fell also bought by Thompson Wholesale Meat Ltd.

Top quality, well drawn, tight skinned, farm assured lambs received a substantial premium throughout the sale selling to 169.7p/kg for an outstanding pen of three-quarters Texel lambs scaling at 38kgs (£64.50) from High Baulk.

Well fleshed hoggs continue to sell well to £58.50 for Texel x from New Acres and 98p/kg for Texel x from Prospect Hill

In the cast ewes and rams section all classes short of requirements and sharper on the week, especially strong well bred ewes which sold to £77 for Bleu du Maine x from Lough Green.

A small but very useful selection of cattle met a strong demand before a large contingent of buyers many of whom would leave empty handed.
