MORE than 30 youngsters finished the Summer Reading Challenge at Corbridge Library.

After reading at least six books and visiting their local library at least three times over the summer holidays, many of the four to 11-year-olds gathered at St Andrew’s Church on Friday to collect their reward. Medals and certificates were handed out to all those who rose to the challenge which this year was dubbed The Big Friendly Read in honour of Roald Dahl’s centenary.

Chairman of Corbridge Parish Council, Coun. Maurice Hodgson, carried out the presentations.

A special mini challenge for under four year olds was also held at the library and tot Darcy Willow Penny (2) was the youngest to take part.

Will Brien, of Beaufront First Schoo,l was the winner and will receive a Roald Dahl activity book and goody bag. All 2,000 participants from across the county are also awaiting the outcome of a Willy Wonka-style prize draw, in which one lucky winner receives a free bar of chocolate each week until Christmas, courtesy of local firm North Chocolates.
