POLICE are investigating after an HGV struck the outside of a building in the centre of Corbridge.

The lorry was travelling east on Hill Street at just before 5pm on Wednesday night when it collided with the Town Hall Buildings while turning left on to Princes Street.

Officers said no-one was hurt but a meeting of Corbridge Parish Council, which took place just hours after the incident, was told by villagers who witnessed what happened that somebody could have been seriously injured.

Damage to supporting beams on a window above Boots the chemist is visible, and Northumberland County Council has put an emergency road closure order in place for a small section of Princes Street, until further notice.

Staff at Boots served customers at the door of premises on Thursday while builders worked inside to carry out repairs.

Normal service is expected to resume on Friday.
