On December 3 last year, Peter Orange (38) targeted Bishop’s Garage on Main Street and took nearly £2,000 worth of cigarettes from the store room.
Appearing at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, Orange, of Stamfordham Road, Cowgate, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to burglary. He was sentenced to 10 weeks imprisonment and must pay £1,927 in compensation and a victim surcharge of £115.
Neighbourhood Inspector Pam Bridges said: “We welcome the sentence handed down by the court and I hope it will act as a reminder to other offenders that they too face spending time in jail if they continue to burgle premises in our area.
“Officers are committed to tackling these crimes and we will continue to target offenders and bring them before the courts to make sure appropriate police action is taken against them.”
