A PLAN to demolish the former Corbridge police station to make way for two new homes has been given the go-ahead.

The facility, in Aydon Road, was one of five police stations in Tynedale earmarked for closure in 2014 due to Government cutbacks.

Neighbourhood officers now work from an office within Corbridge Middle School and the building was marketed for offers in the region of £175,000 in 2015.

Now, the single storey brick building and its large rear car park looks set to be transformed into two four-bedroom homes by villager Nathan Darby.

The site, originally built in the 1970s, consisted of the police station and two police houses on the Aydon Road estate. The houses were sold off in the last decade, and the remaining station has now been disposed of as part of Northumbria Police’s restructuring programme, which saw stations in Ponteland, Haltwhistle and Bellingham also close.

Prudhoe station is also earmarked for closure.

The Corbridge plans include new dropped kerbs and room to park four cars.

The scheme received one objection from a nearby resident which highlighted the visual impact of the development and highway safety as concerns.

However, members of Corbridge Parish Council had no objections and permission was granted by Northumberland County Council’s planning department.
