PEDAL power will generate new funds for a Corbridge cancer charity as cyclists line up for a marathon effort.

Over 50 riders are preparing for a gruelling 100-mile challenge in aid of the Northern Head and Neck Cancer Charity.

The sponsored bike ride has been organised in partnership with WATBike and will take cyclists from Annan in Scotland to Tynemouth in one day.

Those less confident on two wheels can opt for a shorter 20-mile ride from Wylam to Tynemouth.

The Northern Head and Neck Cancer Charity (HANCC) was established by Corbridge resident Evelyn Weightman in 2013.

HANCC has recently become a standalone charity after a number of years of affiliation with the Freeman Hospital.

Following the loss of her husband to neck cancer, Evelyn set up the fund to help raise awareness of, and give support to, sufferers of the condition.

Last year Evelyn was awarded the British Empire Medal in recognition of her community services.

She said: “The sponsored cycle has been a huge undertaking. Fund-raising events we have held previously have all be to do with jumping off things so I’m looking forward to being land based for this one.

“I’m doing the 20-mile route, I’m not a cyclist so it will be a challenge.”

The sponsored cycle will take place on July 30, with WATBike providing minibuses and bike trailers to take cyclists from North Shields to the start line in Annan.

The route will take the riders from Annan to Gilsand and the along the Hadrian Cycleway to Tynemouth.

Evelyn and cyclists Stephen Hall, Colin Hall and Martin Scales met with MP for Hexham Guy Opperman to launch the event.

Mr Opperman said: “The Northern Head and Neck Cancer charity is a wonderful cause, and I wish everyone the best of luck with this incredible effort.”
