VILLAGERS and community leaders in Corbridge have joined forces to form their own flood action group.

After around 45 homes in the village were ravaged by several feet of flood water in the wake of Storm Desmond on December 5, residents are determined to take a pro-active approach to protecting the village.

As an extension to the existing Eales Flats Flood group which was formed by residents of The Stanners and Station Road following the devastating floods of 2005, Corbridge Flood Action group now includes flood victims from Well Bank, representatives of Tynedale Rugby Club and parish councillors.

Among them, is chairman of Corbridge Parish Council, Coun. Maurice Hodgson, who said: “Obviously there are dozens of people affected but we’ve formed a small committee with nine or 10 members to work together to get things done.”

One of the first moves for the group is to meet Hexham’s MP Guy Opperman to discuss how he can help with the ongoing clean-up and stepping up flood defences in the village.
