A COLOURFUL parade of Corbridge First School children made its way through the village on Saturday.

Youngsters dressed in carefully-crafted costumes, as everything from fish and birds to sunshine and stars, snaked their way from the grounds of St Andrew’s Church through the village.

Led by Queen Elizabeth High School’s samba band, A Batida Da Rua, the theme for the annual parade was a celebration of Our Wonderful World.

Weeks of preparation goes into the event, which is supported by the Friends of Corbridge First School, with pupils getting hands-on to help create costumes and banners.

It’s a summer-time tradition which dates back decades and leads the way for parents, families and spectators to join in with one of the school‘s key fund-raisers – the fete day within its grounds on St Helen’s Lane.

This year was the first event under the leadership of headteacher Jennifer Ainsley, who took up her post at the school in September.

She explained: “Last year I had the pleasure of attending the fete as a member of the community, before I began in post.

“It inspired me to see the support and the dedication of the Friends and staff team to provide an enjoyable event for all.

“This year I have been proud to help the team. All money raised will be used to enhance opportunities for the children in school.”

Up to 300 people attended the fete, where staff, parents and families manned stalls with the children, including tombolas, hook a duck, apple bobbing, a coconut shy, balloon release, bouncy castle and inflatable assault course.

Miss Ainsley added: “The final figure raised is not yet confirmed, but we are hoping to be close to our £3,000 target.

“The Friends agreed to use the funds raised to purchase a set of six iPads for the whole school to use.”
