A TEAM of five pupils from Corbridge Middle School are off to the Palace of Westminster in July for the final of a national competition.

The Solutions for the Planet competition, for pupils from Key Stage 3, aims to build partnerships between businesses, schools and communities to develop incredible ideas that make the world better.

Ten teams from five schools took part in the regional finals at the Centre for Life in Newcastle. Operation ReCraft, from Corbridge, who had the idea to run a school sculpture competition using waste materials, were delighted to be announced as the regional winners and received a sustainable wooden trophy.

The team of year sevens, aged 11 to 12, will travel to London on July 11 to compete against the other regional winners and are busily improving their business plan and presentation.

They will also meet Hexham’s MP Guy Opperman in London.

He wished the team well before they competed in the regional finals.

“It is always great to see young people who are passionate about saving our planet and the environment,” he said.

Sculptor Antony Gormley, famous for his work on the Angel of the North, said: “I am delighted that young future-makers in Corbridge know the importance of art for the future of our planet.

“Science and maths are important tools, but without art we would not be able to dream of the world we want to make, or who we could be within it.”
