A NEW flower garden has been created in the Chains Drive Green by seven Corbridge school girls.

The Flower Tots were one of the Corbridge Middle School teams that took part in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Green Plan It challenge in last autumn.

The group wowed judges with their idea for a community sensory garden for Corbridge, and were advised to apply for a Greening Grey Britain Award.

Dr Meryl Batchelder, subject leader for science, applied for the funding in conjunction with Corbridge in Bloom, which covers support from the RHS community team and up to £500 of plants and materials. The grant application was successful and the garden was given the green-light.

The Year 8 girls, Soraya Kentish, Kate Walsh, Grace Nye, Cecile Durkin, Ellie Robson, Erin Wilde and Ruby Mallon worked closely with Christine Wright, the RHS North East Community Outreach advisor, to refine their design for the plot and choose suitable plants for the five senses.

Landscaping was donated by Peter Cumliffe at Northumbrian Landscaping and the girls planted the garden themselves.

There will be a celebration of the girls’ success at the garden on Thursday.
