New venture: Sue Lawrence and TV presenter Helen Ford outside Martha’s Tea Room in Corbridge.

Martha’s Tea Room in the village market place has taken over the premises previously occupied by the Market Place Cafe.

And despite only being open since mid-June its bacon sandwiches, pates and soups are already proving a hit with the customers.

The new venture, dreamt up by Sue Lawrence, who lives near Stocksfield, came about after she secured a part-time job at nearby Tea & Tipple in the village.

Sue, a fashion graduate who also designs and makes costumes for stage and screen in her spare time, said: “I enjoyed working part time in a coffee shop so much that when the opportunity came along I decided to give it a go for myself.

“We have quite a good variety on the menu, whether you’re after a coffee and a cake or a more substantial snack.”

Named after Sue’s 84-year-old mother, the business was officially opened by ITV Tyne Tees presenter Helen Ford on July 23.

The 40-seat premises is now providing employment for one full-time member of staff and four part-time members. Sue has plans to hire out the second floor of the building to customers organising a special event.

She added: “Because we are on two floors it is easy for us to be able to cater for conferences, birthdays and other private functions upstairs.

“I have always enjoyed cooking and I’m used to cooking on a large scale so using upstairs for special occasions will be good use of the space.”
