TODAY sees the return of carpet bowls to the town hall.

It’s a game that requires skill, strategy and a bit of cunning and it’s also really good fun.

The group playing in the town hall is very welcoming, so if you fancy giving it a go, just join them on Friday evenings at 7pm, and you even get the first try free.

IN my report of the leek show last week I failed to mention Jim Tait, who – as we are beginning to get used to – amassed the most points in the baking classes.

I understand this is the fourth year in a row that Jim pulled off this feat.

THE MacMillan coffee morning in the town hall last Friday was very well attended, the cake stall was excellent, as usual and a good number of raffle tickets were sold.

I haven’t yet heard how much was raised, either at that event or the one at the school, but I’ll let you know when I do.

I UNDERSTAND the Northern Counties ploughing competition at Combyheugh, near Chipchase, last weekend was a great success.

There were 43 entrants over three classes, including three in the class for novices under 26 years old.

Entrants came from all over the North of England and Southern Scotland.

The schedule doesn’t show the people ploughing with a team of horses, but I’ve seen a film clip of the horse ploughing and it’s fascinating to see how much effort two horses put in to pull the plough.

FINALLY, an advance warning about our Highlights events this autumn.

We’re really lucky to have Three Boxes, by the Different Strings Music Agency, on Saturday, October 24 and the Baghdaddies on Saturday, November 21.

Both gigs are expected to be very popular and indeed more than 20 tickets for each have already been sold.
