CALVERT Trust Kielder looks set to receive a bumper loan from Northumberland County Council for a scheme which will help to grow its visitor numbers.

The loan would be used for the purchase of staff accommodation within Kielder Village, which would free up two chalets at the trust’s award-winning centre within Kielder Water & Forest Park.

At a meeting of Northumberland County Council’s cabinet on Tuesday, all members agreed to recommend to the council that they approve the requested loan of up to £300,000, repayable over 20 years through the additional income generated by the chalets.

Calvert Trust Kielder provides opportunities for those with disabilities and their families to take part in a range of outdoor pursuits to help achieve their potential.

It welcomes families, groups and individuals on residential and day visits and offers 24-hour respite care for adults travelling alone.

Calvert Trust Kielder chief executive, Peter Cockerill, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Northumberland County Council is considering the loan for Calvert Trust Kielder. The loan will be used to purchase staff accommodation in Kielder and will make an enormous difference to our staff and, ultimately, the many people who benefit from our centre and facilities.”

The scheme would allow the renovation of two freed-up chalets, using £150,000 of the trust’s own resources, which could then be rented out.

The scheme is expected to generate approximately £89,000 additional income through the extra rental costs.
