CORSENSIDE Parish Show celebrated its 173rd year with a fun-packed day for all the family.

Last weekend the village green at West Woodburn was full to the brim with prize leeks, vegetables, flowers, baking, needlework and photography, and both adults and children got involved in the friendly competition.

Andrew McAlpine, director at Sir Robert McAlpine, which supported the show, awarded the prizes.

John Bassett scooped the Challenge Cup for King Leek, the Farmura Cup for the best collection of vegetables, the Leek Improvers Cup for most improved leek grower and a Leek Club Special Prize for best cucumber.

Best exhibit in the flower classes was won by club stalwart George Dent, who also won the Vickers Defence Trophy for most points in the vegetable and flower classes and the Bill Raine Memorial Trophy for the best three cactus dahlias.

The R. Charlton Memorial Trophy for best pot plant was won by Andrew Goodall.

Competition in the industrial section was tough and the tables were laden with cakes, scones, jams, chutneys and other items. The Challenge Tray for most points in the adult industrial section was won by Caroline Currie.

Rachel Raine impressed judges and won the Stuart Thomson Memorial Cup with her novelty cake crafted as a basket of roses.

Isobel Stanners won the Tom Hughes Junior Cup for the most points in the children’s sections.

The heaviest bucket of potatoes was won by Sylvia Fairrie in the adult class, Rhys Scott in the under 16s and Jacob Murray in the under 8s.

A craft marquee on the day saw a range of local traders offering a wide selection of items, from handcrafted leather goods to original paintings, while the face painting was a popular stand with the youngsters.

A wealth of mouth-watering cakes and biscuits were enjoyed in the tea tent, while many tried their hand at the pairs quoits competition, which was won by Graham Robson and Joe Martin.

The day was rounded-off with an early evening junior disco, followed by live music with local band Takahaad.

Committee member Maureen Johnson said: “The show committee would like to thank all of the sponsors, judges, helpers, participants and everyone involved in making this year’s show another great success.”
