BARRASFORD villagers are campaigning for drivers to stick to the speed limit amid fears for the safety of children.

The main road leading through the north Tyne village has a 30mph speed limit, but concerned residents have spoken out after putting up with cars travelling at what they say is sometimes double the limit.

Barrasford resident Maggie Tarbit, who works part-time in the village shop, has started a petition asking for speed control measures to be considered for the road. The petition has gathered over 60 signatures in its first week.

“The children’s playground is right next to the road and the village shop is on the other side,” she said.

“During the summer holidays last year, kids would be playing in the park and playing field and would run across the road to the shop to buy some ice cream or sweets.

“People are concerned it is an accident waiting to happen.

“I have seen some people doing what I think must be about 60mph, but cars regularly come through at 40 or 50 rather than 30.”

Mrs Tarbit hopes to take the petition to the next west area committee meeting of the county council after receiving pledges of support from members of Chollerford Parish Council.

She said the headteacher of Chollerton First School had also pledged support.

“Speed control seems the only way to enforce it and get people to slow down,” she added. “People have suggested rumble strips, like what they have in Acomb.

“This has long been of grave concern to a lot of people in the village and people feel quite strongly about it.”

The petition is available to sign at Barrasford Village Store.
