NORTHUMBERLAND County Council has confirmed that there are no current plans to relocate a North Tyne tourist information centre.

The location of the tourist information centre at Bellingham came into question last week, with talk of a possible move to the town hall where Northumberland County Council already rents space for the library.

The centre currently shares premises with the Heritage Centre on Station Yard.

Although more centrally located, residents feared that if the centre was to move to the town hall it could be too far out of sight for tourists.

The current location is thought to be ideal because of its close proximity to the Heritage Centre and Hareshaw Linn and close to bus drop-off points.

The county council has reassured residents that the centre will not be moving.

A spokesman said: “There are no current plans to move the tourist iInformation centre into the library.

“Where possible we are integrating and co-locating frontline services like these, however in Bellingham at present, we believe that the service is provided from the best location for visitors.”

The news comes in the wake of the sudden transfer of Hexham’s tourist information centre to the Queen’s Hall, which both confused and outraged residents and tourists alike.
