A WEST Woodburn self-build has been recognised for its design with a national Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award.

Shawm House was one of three North-East buildings to receive a national RIBA award.

Built by Richard Pender for his parents, Tony and Anne, and designed by Dan Kerr, of MawsonKerr Architects, Shawm House is a sustainable, eco-friendly design. It boasts level thresholds, wide doors, ramps, electric blinds and curtains and intercom front door control.

The home won four trophies at the regional RIBA awards in May: RIBA North East Award 2017, RIBA North East Small Project 2017, RIBA North East Sustainability Award 2017 and RIBA North East Project Architect of the Year 2017 for designer Dan Kerr.

Now, along with two other North-East buildings, Live Works in Newcastle and The Word in South Shields, Shawm House is amongst 49 buildings across the UK to have received national awards.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize, for the UK’s best building of the year, will be drawn from these winners.
