WARK residents will soon have better access to phone signals after plans to install a mobile phone mast in the village have been approved.

Planning permission for the 15-metre mast to be placed on the edge of the five-a-side football court in the grounds of Wark Sports Club has been approved by Northumbria County Council.

Communications firm Shared Access have not yet given a date on when the installation will take place, although it has said it will be within the next couple of months.

This is welcome news for many Wark residents, who currently do not receive any mobile phone service in and around the village.

Chairman of Wark Parish Council, Anne Hutchinson, said: “The councillors were in agreement that this was a good thing for Wark as mobile service here is terrible.

“There has been some concern lately due to the plans to remove BT phone boxes, and while ours was only used 25 times in the last year it’s so important for us to have because of the lack of phone signal in the village. With better phone coverage it will be safer for people in emergencies and just a welcome relief for everyone.”
