LOCALS are being invited to get a glimpse of the finished product of Humsaugh’s new boutique hotel Walwick Hall this weekend, before its official opening on Monday.

After 18 months of extensive renovation to turn the 18th century Grade II listed stately home into a country hotel, work is just about complete and owner Rachel Batson (30) is ready to show off the finished product.

From 11am until 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, people can pop in to see the transformation for themselves, and be greeted by a warm reception and a glass of fizz.

The luxury hotel is set in 100 acres of unspoiled grounds. Each of its 10 bedrooms are impressively decorated to their own individual classic Victorian theme.

While grand in its appearance, the decor is also traditional, blending in with the views of the countryside from the hotel’s windows.

Rachel said: “There was a lot of work to do when we began; it hadn’t been lived in for 15 years. But the main thing we wanted to do was to restore Walwick Hall to how it should have been, keeping the traditional feel and retaining its original features.

“We know that many people will be coming to Northumberland for walking or fishing, so we will help point them in the right direction by recommending local businesses or tours.

“We have also employed local people who know the area well, so they are able to give a more personal service and point people in the right direction.

“There are people of all ages interested in the hotel. Northumberland brings people to the area itself; there is so much to see and do. But we are hoping to bring something special to Northumberland and support local businesses too.”

Rachel said there were advance bookings well into next year. And the owner of the Close House golf course Graham Wylie, himself a former owner of Walwick Hall, has booked out the hotel for next autumn’s British Masters.

But Rachel, who moved to the area from Ponteland after the purchase of Walwick Hall in 2014, said the hotel is as much for locals as it is for visitors.

As well as creating 32 local jobs so far, with more to come, locals are welcome to use the restaurant and bar, as well as the fully-fitted gym and impressive new spa facilities.

Rachel said: “There has been a lot of interest from the local community in the hotel, and the open weekend is a chance for them to come in and have a look round.

“We want them to know that just because we are a hotel, it doesn’t mean they can’t pop in at any time. Whether it’s for a coffee, an afternoon tea or an evening meal, the door is always open to the public and we’re excited to show them round what we’ve created.”

Head chef Steven Murray has created a seasonal menu, which includes locally farmed beef and lamb.

Steven said: “The menu is all locally sourced, so the food blends in perfectly with the beautiful setting here. It’s seasonal too, so will be changing all the time.

“Some people might think that the price will be extravagant, but at an average of £30 for a three-course meal, its very reasonable for the quality of food. We want people in the area to feel they can join us at any time.”
