Tynedale families have the chance to be immersed in an interactive Easter trail in Kirkwhelpington, where they will discover more about the lives of the northern saints.

The churches of the Upper Wansbeck Valley have come together to produce the trail in the ancient church of St Bartholomew in Kirkwhelpington, working with volunteers from the community.

It will explore the themes of Easter by taking visitors through the lives of St Bede, St Hilda of Whitby, St Cuthbert, St Aidan and St Oswald.

Rev. Jonathan Mason said: “I have been here since last summer but I believe this is the fourth year the church has held a trail at Easter.

“Previously we have told the story of Easter in different ways but this year we decided to do something slightly different.

“It will tell something of the story of people, especially in this part of England, through the lives of northern saints.

“Anybody can do it, not just children, and it’s a fun and interactive way to learn something new about Easter.”

Displays tell the story of each saint through pictures, objects and a timeline.

It welcomes visitors from all faiths and, as well as being open to the public, there will be individual days of learning, music and craft activities for local first schools.

Children from schools at Belsay, Cambo, Walton and Longhorsley, as well as a group from Hexham Priory School, will visit this week and next for their very own interactive tour, where they will have the chance to put on habits and learn more about a day in the life of monks and nuns.

The trail will run from March 26 to April 17.
