A BARRASFORD carpet bowls club put its brand new equipment to use last week by teaching the game to the younger generation.

Youngsters from Barrasford Scout Group joined members of Barrasford Village Hall Carpet Bowls Club on November 17 for a taster session.

The Scouts were able to test out the club’s two new bowls mats, purchased through grants from the Police Commission and EDF Green Rigg Wind Farm Community Fund.

Village hall secretary Deb Haycock said: “Part of the grant allows us to branch out into the community and get young people involved with the club, so we’re very grateful to the grant providers for the purchase of the mats.

“We’re hoping the Scouts will make it a regular thing in their calendar, as they’re all really keen to be involved, and it is good to see the older generation and younger people doing something together.

“The club started off with only two or three members with second hand mats. Now there’s around a dozen of them, so the new mats are a great addition and will allow us to invite other clubs along such as Otterburn and Bellingham.”
