CHILDREN, parents and professionals gathered last week to say an emotional goodbye to a Bellingham nursery manager, who has retired after 23 years of service.

Jenni Holland began at North Tynies in 1993, when there was no free childcare in the area, only two childminders and no childcare for the 0-3 years age group.

During her time there, she has helped revolutionise the child care system from the centre at Bellingham Middle School.

Now it runs the local pre-schools as well as a 50-place nursery in Bellingham, and runs the Sure Start Childrens’ Centre services for 400 square miles.

Last week, North Tynies held a tea party for children and parents past and present to say goodbye to Jenni on her last day, with some bearing gifts and cards of well wishes.

Jenni said: “It’s heartwarming to see them all here today wishing me well. It’s really amazing and I feel very emotional.

“It feels terrible to leave because I love it here so much, but this is the right time, and I know I am leaving it in good hands with all of the amazing staff and our new manager, Helen.

“I’ll be doing some travelling and getting to know my three grandchildren more, who have all been born within the last 16 months!

“I like to give everything my all and have put everything into making this centre a place where every child can reach their potential.

“Now I can enjoy giving my new grandchildren that attention, but it’s very sad to say goodbye.”

As well as child care services, the childrens’ centre offers family support for those who need it most, which has proved to be an invaluable service for the North Tyne.

Joanne Norman has worked with Jenni for over 10 years and attended the celebrations.

She said: “Jenni has really made an incredible contribution to children and families in this area with what she has done for North Tynies and the support now on offer here.

“Everyone is so sad to see her go and it has been a very emotional day.”

On the evening of Jenni’s last day, a cheese and wine party was held for professionals to say goodbye.

Around 50 people attended, including the chairman of governors, who came to congratulate Jenni for the dedication she has put into the centre.
