A DERELICT stable block has been given a new lease of life thanks to hard-working fund-raisers.

The Friends of Chollerton and members of St Giles’ Church and the local community put their heads together to raise an impressive £28,000 to go towards the renovation of the church.

The old stable block has been on the site for around 150 years and was where the vicar used to keep his horses.

Over the years the building went to ruin and vicar the Rev. Michael Slade was told if nothing was done the roof was sure to collapse.

Following a series of fund-raising events and collections, in just 12 months, enough money was raised to repair the stables and the churchyard walls.

Mr Slade said: “It’s part of one of the most attractive looking hearse houses in Northumberland and it’s in a lovely position as you see it as you approach Chollerton. The money raised is a fantastic effort and people have been very generous.”

Work began on the Grade II-listed building at the end of October and it is hoped it will be finished by Christmas. The building will house historical photographs from the area, including images of quarrying, farming and the Haughton Ferry that travelled from Chollerton to Humshaugh.

“We want people to come in and be able to sense the feel of the area,” Mr Slade added. “We think it’s a very interesting building and want people to be able to see what the local area can offer.”
