OUTDOOR fans are being invited on a camp out under England’s starriest sky, with a chance to see the wonders of the Milky Way.

The fourth Kielder Peoples’ Star Camp, a unique two-night event, will take place at Kielder Campsite on October 13 and 14.

A series of powerful telescopes will be set up to enable campers to view the night sky at what is the darkest spot in the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.

Last year, the camp drew nearly 100 people, many seeing the Milky Way for the first time.

Organiser and stargazer Richard Darn said: “Kielder Campsite is already home to a major international star camp, but this version is aimed at beginners. We’ll provide telescopes to get brilliant close-up views and keep our eyes peeled for shooting stars and artificial satellites scuttling across the night sky.”

Light pollution across the UK means that 90 per cent of the population has never seen the Milky Way. Northumberland is the darkest county in England, where visitors can see thousands of stars as well as elusive wonders such as the Northern Lights.
