AMBITIOUS plans have been submitted to complete the gradual transformation of a former grand hotel in Allendale.

The imposing Dale Hotel, in the Market Square, was once a jewel in Allendale’s crown, offering 35 luxury rooms.

But after closing in 2002, it stood empty for more than 10 years with Virginia creeper covering its neglected walls.

Now, three years after being purchased by Tony and Linda Beck, the Dale is gradually returning to its former glories.

The couple have already re-opened part of the building, known as the Bunkhouse, to provide accommodation for walking trips and youth ventures.

And now they have submitted new plans for the hotel, to transform the eastern part of the building into a luxury large-scale self catering unit comprising 20 beds.

The unit, which would be called Dale House, would be available for group bookings such as wedding parties and family gatherings.

Mrs Beck said the accommodation would include a wine cellar, a spa floor, sauna and jacuzzi, and would offer group ‘pamper’ packages.

It would also be made available to groups taking part in outdoor activities.

Mrs Beck said: “The Dale Hotel is a very historic building and we have worked hard to make a it a vital part of this community once again.

“If this plan goes ahead, it will complement what we have already achieved here and will bring more people into Allendale.”

Mrs Beck said the ongoing transformation of the Dale has generated much interest.

She added: “When we bought it, the building wasn’t in as bad a state as a lot of people had thought.

“The Virginia creeper dominated the frontage. We had to repair leaks in the roof, and replace rotten beams and guttering.

“But it has been a joy to remove the creeper, reveal the beautiful stonework underneath, and to carry out the work we have achieved so far.”
