A LEEK show which opens its doors to vegetables and flowers enjoyed its seventh outing in Allendale.

The Allen Valley and King’s Head Leek Club was established back in 2011, following the merger of two local clubs, and has grown into a colourful annual event.

Its most recent outing, on Sunday September 10, at St Cuthbert’s Church Hall, was a resounding success.

Treasurer John Short said: “In a difficult growing season, with a wide selection of temperatures, we had a very good stand of exhibits in flowers and vegetables, filling the hall to capacity.”

Bryen Myers was the leek champion with an impressive entry of 103.66 cu ins.

John Short was second with 73.87 cu ins, while M. Short was third with 76.30 cu ins.

Trophies were presented by Dave Stevenson, landlord of the King’s Head pub in Allendale.

It was a good day for Bryen Myers, who won several trophies for his vegetables and flowers.

Mark Henderson, Robin Rutter and David Thirlwell were also among the winners, along with Doug Murray.
