A NEW organising committee has been set up to take Allendale Fair into a new era.

The long-running event has been a mainstay of the Allen Valley’s social calendar for more than 30 years.

But its organisers, the Allendale Lions group, decided to hand over the reins in a bid to attract new blood.

Tony Beck, who runs outdoor activities venture Becks Training, has been installed as chairman of a new fair committee.

His wife Linda is one of about eight newly-appointed committee members, while several other volunteers have offered their services.

Mrs Beck confirmed that this year’s fair will take place from Friday, May 26, to Sunday, May 28, and said it will offer something for everyone.

It will kick off with a children’s disco and party games in Allendale Market Place on the Friday evening.

Saturday will see the return of the event’s popular strongman contest along with traditional stalls and activities, while on Sunday, the Allen Valley Striders will host the annual fell race.

But this year’s fair will also see new attractions, such as a climbing wall in the Market Place and archery and bushcraft activities.

Linda said: “There will be no karaoke competition this time, but there will be an open-mic session on the Saturday.

“We would be very keen to hear from anyone who would like to help or get involved, or any potential sponsors.”
