FIREFIGHTERS in Allendale became car washers for a day – and raised more than £440 for charity.

Dozens of motorists took advantage of the car washing day, outside Gowland’s Garage, in the corner of Allendale Market Square, on March 18.

Members of Allendale’s 12-strong retained fire crew took part in the effort, in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity.

The organisation supports serving and retired firefighters who have sustained injury or illness in the line of duty.

James Birchall, a member of the retained crew at Allendale, said: “This is the second year that we’ve done this, and it was very well supported.

“In total we raised £442, which is a good effort in aid of a very worthy cause.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributed, and we look forward to next year’s car wash.”
