A VITAL artery for school buses and public transport in the Allen Valleys is set to close for 10 weeks early in the New Year.

Highways chiefs say major refurbishment is essential at the listed Sipton Bridge, on the B6295 between Sinderhope and Spartylea.

The announcement by Northumberland County Council follows speculation that the bridge would be closed for just six weeks.

Earlier this month, Allendale Parish Council raised concerns that there were no obvious diversionary routes for motorists. This week however, a county council spokesman said a suitable diversion would be agreed and clearly signposted.

He explained: “As part of our masonry arch refurbishment programme, we intend to carry out repairs to Sipton Bridge on the B6295.

“The temporary props that support the bridge are nearing the end of their suitable life and the refurbishment work will keep the bridge and road above it in operation for years to come.

“We are looking to do the work early next calendar year in order to minimise disruption in the pre-Christmas or busy summer periods.

“The work is expected to take up to 28 weeks, with a closure period of around 10 weeks.

“The methods of work are being designed to keep the closure period as short as possible.”

Local county councillor Colin Horncastle says the route is relied upon by school transport, as well as public service buses and taxis.

Speaking last Wednesday, Coun. Horncastle said: “I am still concerned that the only alternative route will take motorists on a diversion of several miles around by Carrshield and Coalcleugh.

“I believe the ideal solution is to delay this until the summer holidays of 2017, in the best interests of school transport.”
