THE sound of a motorbike could be heard roaring into Whitfield Village Fair last weekend.

On board was an elderly couple, who decided to make the 600-mile round trip from London just to be there.

The veteran bikers were keen to be part of the event, having discovered it by chance last year whilst travelling through the area.

And they weren’t disappointed, for the ninth annual show at the Blue Back Field was a resounding success.

Star attraction Kathleen Lyon entertained in the main ring with her duck and dog display.

The annual fell race attracted 59 competitors – despite taking place on the same day as the Great North Run.

The Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling was keenly contested, as was the event’s annual dog show, while the industrial tent was packed full of arts, crafts and home baking.

Treasurer Katherine Halliday Rowell said: “We had a great day. Everything went really well and it’s always nice when the weather is kind to us and everyone can enjoy themselves.

“We saw a lot of high quality entries in the different classes and the show was well supported by children and families.

“People were able to enjoy afternoon teas in the village hall, and we are grateful to everyone who contributed to what was a very successful day.

“It was lovely to see the couple from London. They are both 80 years old, but after discovering the show quite by chance last year, were very keen to come and see it again.”

Katherine announced that next year’s show will be its 10th anniversary.

It will take place, once again, on the second Sunday in September.
