WHEN two leek clubs pooled their resources six years ago, the result was one big colourful show.

Under the umbrella of the Allen Valley and King’s Head Leek Club, the show has evolved into a busy annual event.

St Cuthbert’s Church Hall in Allendale was packed with quality entries for the class of 2016.

It was a prolific day for Doug Murray, who picked up a plethora of awards in several categories, including potatoes, onions, turnips, beetroot, tomatoes, cabbage, marrow, beans and leeks.

Doug was awarded the R. Thornton Trophy for most points in the members’ vegetable section and the T. Forrest Memorial Cup for best entry of six tomatoes.

Mark Henderson won the Ellen Ashman Memorial Challenge Cup with a stand of leeks measuring 139.38 cu ins.

He also collected respective trophies for most points in the members’ flower section and best bowl of cut flowers.

Brian Myers won best exhibit in the members’ section with his collection of vegetables.

It was also a memorable event for brothers David and John Thirlwell, who gained honours in many categories, including tomatoes and chrysanthemums.

Robin Rutter was awarded the trophy for best exhibit in the open section for his truss of tomatoes.

Secretary and treasurer John Short said: “The hall was packed to capacity, and as you entered, the scents and sights of so many wonderful exhibits greeted you.”

Mr Short, who was runner-up in the leek section with leeks of 122.52 cu ins, received trophies for most improved leek grower and best leeks grown without cover.
