a LUNCH club in Allendale has benefited from a tasty donation of £331 from the Allendale Co-operative Society.

Since October last year, the town’s independent Co-op store has charged 5p for carrier bags, with the money raised supporting good causes in the community.

Allendale Lunch Club has become the first beneficiary, and will receive £331.05 raised within the first three months of the scheme.

The lunch club meets in the village hall from 10am every Thursday, and includes a chair-based exercise class, as well as a two course meal. It is run by volunteers from Age UK.

Allendale Co-operative Society company secretary Jane Brown said: “We were pleased to donate a cheque for £331.05 to the lunch club to help them continue to provide a wonderful service to our community.

“We do hope that customers appreciate the reasoning behind the bag charge, and will continue to support us in our efforts to reduce bag sales and also protect the environment and wildlife from the consequences of the over use of disposable bags.”

The next beneficiary of the scheme will be Allendale Youth Club.
