PUBLIC access could soon be reinstated at a historic Haydon Bridge landmark.

The sulphurous spring at Haydon Spa, located to the east of the village, fell victim to Storm Desmond in December 2015.

The footpath leading to the spring, which is popular with local people and visitors, was extensively damaged when the neighbouring River South Tyne burst its banks.

But Northumberland County Council has teamed up with the Tyne Rivers Trust in a bid to carry out essential repair work.

A county council spokeswoman said the authority has earmarked infrastructure repair funding for the project.

She added: “We are making good progress with the project and aim to progress as soon as all permissions and agreements are in place.

“We are very pleased to be able to reinstate access to this popular local attraction.”

Local county councillor Alan Sharp added: “This work needs to be done and I am confident that progress is now being made with this scheme.”

Haydon Spa, located between the A69 trunk road and the River South Tyne, has fallen victim to the elements over the years. Back in 2005, work was carried out to prevent a gradual landslip which had prevented access to the attraction for over a year.
