WORK has begun on constructing a new shop on the long vacant site adjacent to Hexham‘s Marks and Spencer store.

Although planning permission for the new store was granted to the Co-operative group, the name of the prospective tenants has yet to be formally revealed.

But while the  Co-operative Group remains tight lipped as to which company is lined up to take on the new store, the name being bandied about is that of discount retailer B&M.

Whoever eventually occupies the store, the development will put additional pressure on parking places in Hexham, as it will reduce the dwindling number of available spaces in the town centre by 92.

And with the new bus station set to appropriate the vast majority of available spaces in the Loosing Hill car park. and plans afoot to cut the number of long stay spaces at Wentworth by half, parking will be at an even bigger premium.
