As it continued its journey on the eastbound carriageway of the A69, near to Hexham’s Bridge End roundabout a female front seat passenger came out of the moving vehicle.

The car, a black Ford Fiesta, drove away from the scene without checking on the woman.

Emergency services attended and the female passenger was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

She remains in hospital in a critical condition.

A 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and remains in police custody.

Detectives have taken on the investigation and are appealing for anyone who may have seen the incident, or was in the area at the time to get in touch.

Officers particularly want to speak to anyone who saw the vehicle travelling from Bardon Mill towards Hexham at around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.

Northumbria Police Detective Sergeant Dave Croskery said: "This was a really dangerous incident and we need to speak to anyone who saw the Ford Fiesta in the area at the time of the incident.

"The vehicle is believed to have been travelling at around 60mph when this happened and clearly we need to speak to anyone who saw the woman leave the vehicle as it travelled from Bardon Mill towards Hexham.

"Those involved were known to each other and we have a man in custody at this time but an investigation is still very much underway and further information from the public is invaluable."

Anyone with information about the incident, or who saw what happened is asked to contact police on 101 quoting log number 814 25/03/17 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
