KIRKHARLE is preparing for a bank holiday weekend full of events celebrating the tercentenary of England’s greatest landscape gardener.

From Saturday to Monday, there will be a range of events to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown.

Tickets for Friday night’s concert in St Wilfrid’s with Alexander Armstrong have already sold out, but there are other events to get involved in.

At Kirkharle, at 7pm on Saturday, local broadcaster and historian John Grundy will give a talk entitled A very Northumbrian gardener about the life and times of Capability and his influence on the English landscape.

On Sunday at 11am, the Bishop of Newcastle, the Rt Rev. Christine Hardman, will conduct a service of holy communion in St Wilfrid’s Church, where Brown was baptised.

Finally, Bank Holiday Monday brings a traditional church fete to Kirkharle Courtyard with storyteller Jim Grant and John Sadler dressed as Brown.

There will be a variety of stalls, including cakes, books and bric-a-brac, and music from the Cherry Pickers.

For children there will be a treasure hunt, coconut shy and pony carriage rides.

Starting at 1pm, the Kirkharle fete will be the culmination of several months of events which have been held to mark the birthday of one of Northumberland’s most famous sons.
